The Odessa branch of the Hellenic Foundation for Culture has organized various events to honor the renowned Dr. Georgios Papanikolaou, a Greek pioneer who invented the so-called Pap test, a test allowing early detection of cervical cancer.
Entitled The Great Giver of Life – George Papanikolaou (1883-1962) the event is designed to provide a look into the life of a man who saved many lives, detailing his early career, and later great medical achievements. There will also be a digital exhibition with photographs, letters and other data concerning Papanikolaou’s life and career, as well as a 2008 documentary directed by Lefteris Xanthopoulos.
Occasioned by the events in memory of Papanikolaou, the Municipality of Odessa anounced that local women can have a cervical test in every public hospital for free from Sept. 6-14.
